Mission Statement

What do we do?

314 action ucla is a nonprofit organization committed to fostering stem (science, technology, engineering, and math) understanding and values in our community.

We are advocates for scientific clarity in political discussion, increasing accessibility of scientific knowledge, and for promoting stem-trained candidates for public office.

Our goal is to help all members of our community evaluate the scientific credibility of political stances on stem-related issues.

  • Science advocacy
  • Public forums / panels with scientists or politicians
  • Local and national elections
  • Evaluation of STEM-related issues
  • Training in scientific communication

Members are welcome to suggest ideas or spearhead a particular project they are passionate about (for example, organize a panel discussion with local politicians and experts centered on a certain STEM-related issue).

Why did we form?

We formed in early 2017 because like many others, we were concerned with how the current administration was utilizing and representing science in policy. From climate change stances to positions on vaccinations, we were consistently seeing scientific findings ignored and evidence-based reasoning left out of social discussions. As as group of science students and researchers, we were passionate about these issues and wanted to find out how we could apply our STEM skills towards solving them at the grassroots levels.
